Palmyrene relief representing Bola and Mola

- The national museum of Damascus – متحف دمشق الوطني

Description

A man and a woman sit next to each other on a patterned mattress, both leaning on large pillows. To the left is an octagonal chest with a richly profiled lid on a stand. The female wears a simple chiton, a scarf, and light sandals. Her headband below the turban is decorated with a heavy chain. Her earrings are made of several rounded balls; the four-stranded necklace is particularly sumptuous, as are the wide bracelets.

The male wears a short Parthian chiton with richly embroidered front panel and sleeves. On his carefully combed curly hair he wears a wreath with a rosette emblem. In his left hand he holds a bowl with an indented regular pattern, known from contemporary silver and glass vessels. He holds a small palm branch in his right hand.

The Palmyrene inscription tells us that these figures are brother and sister. The cloth suspended behind the male indicates that he is the deceased; the work, therefore, was commissioned by the sister. This relief was positioned on top of a large sarcophagus. The style, the rendering of the beard, and the treatment of the eyes suggest a date from the middle to the third quarter of the second century.
