Description

This deep container may have been used as a cucurbit in the distillation process. It would have supported the head of a still that could have produced distilled products like rosewater. A liquid was placed in the cucurbit and heated until it boiled; vapor rising from the boiling liquid collected in the still head on top. As it cooled, the vapor condensed into a distilled liquid that trickled down a tubeshaped spout into a flask. This was the method used in the Muslim world to produce perfumed essences from aromatic plants.
