Limestone Altar With Inscription Dedicated To The Anonymous God

All the inscriptions dedicated to the merciful are written in thanksgiving for fulfilling the prayers of individuals. Some of them, for instance also contain an invocation: ‘may his name be blessed forever’. In this case, the title or name ‘the merciful’ is specially emphasized by the pronoun: ‘for him, for the merciful’. moreover, the merciful appears as the addressee of a Greek inscription from Palmyra, in which he is called ‘one and only merciful god’.
